Day 4: Hearing Through the Word

Jen FinalOftentimes, I have had a question about God’s plan for me and wished desperately that I could flip open the Bible and find the very specific answer to my very specific question.

Me:  Should I quit my job so that I can focus on women’s ministry and speaking out Your Word?  And, if so, when would be the best time for me to do that?

The answer I’d love from the Bible:  Jen Ferguson, you should quit your job and you should leave July 31st.

Unfortunately, my first name is not even in the Bible, so this is never going to happen.  But, perhaps if I examine my question closely and break it down, I could still find answers in His Word. For example:

Me:  Will You provide for me if I step away from this job and the income that it brings in?

God:  “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?  Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?  Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”  Matthew 6: 25-27

The amazing thing about reading and knowing scripture is that it teaches us about God’s character.  The more confirmation that we can store up inside our hearts and minds about His goodness and intentions for us, the more we will be able to discern whether or not it’s God’s voice that we are hearing.

Challenge:  What are some of the specific questions that you have been asking God lately?  Now, back up from those questions for a minute.  Do any of them have to do with greater issues such as self-worth, love, worry, fear, forgiveness, etc.?  Perhaps sit down with your Bible, flip to the back to the concordance, and look up what God has to say about whatever the greater issue is.  (Note:  It can be dangerous and not always fruitful to take one sentence out of the Bible at a time.  Think about reading more passages around the specific verse so that you get a general gist of what the author is saying and to whom he is saying it.)

Congrats to the giveaway winner at Finding Heaven, Mami2jen!  Thank you to everyone who entered!

  1. Another excellent post, Jen
I like your approach to just learning more from Him about HIS character when you are trying to find an answer to a question.

I also can't tell you how many times I have just had the perfect response to a question of my heart by continuing with my daily study, whatever that may be. When I take my focus off of my own personal question and just study for the sake of study, I almost always find an answer prepared in advance for me.

I think God's Word is the coolest.
Not a profound way to put it, I know. But I do.

  3. His word is amazing. It's wonderful when He speaks, encourages, exhorts, and corrects through His Word. What a privilege to live in a generation where His Word is so easily accessible!

  5. Yes I need to know His character in order to know what He has for me...great point. He does speak through His word...I just need to be obedient in spending time there.

  6. Oh dear friend...it takes perseverance to truly focus in the affirmations of Our Lord.

He knows exactly what we need to read and hear...it is up to us to be open to it.

  8. Thank you for this, Jen. I needed to hear it. It is "easy" to seek answers for God on specifics. It is harder, but way more rewarding, to seek His voice out in the revelation He has given us. Blessings on you as you make these tough decisions and seek out His will!

  9. I am really enjoying your 31 days closer to God. This post has great insight. Often times I find myself focusing on such a specific part of something that I am seeking an answer too. I think I need to "step back" a bit. Thanks again!
