5 Minute Friday: RED

I'm in bed sick with a fever, which I really hardly ever am, and I wonder if it is a very tangible reminder to me that I am human and not superhuman.  And tho' my back aches and my head hurts and my nose feels like it has a canary stuck up in it, I still feel a little twinge of excitement about having a reason to lay on the couch and watch mindless television or read my book.

But back to red, the prompt for today...

Red to me is warning...
siren lights
fire engines
stop signs
stop lights
Anger flashing in front of my eyes.

But red is also passion.
A fiery burn that can fuel the soul,
move it relentlessly toward
what God has created us to do,
live, walk, breathe.

Red can be in your face
Look-at-me-beautiful rose,
Stand out among the crowd.
Jesus never wore red,
except on the cross.

Red as sacrifice,
life poured out for another,
spilled for purpose
and healing
and forgiveness.

Red as anger
Red for forgiveness.
Both spilled out...

(Glad time ran out because I wasn't sure how to end this. Ideas? Would love to hear them!)

I'm hanging out with Lisa-Jo this morning.  Want in?  Here's the deal:

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..

  1. You linked up before me on FMF today. :) I am pondering your words, and thankful for the thoughts on the paradox of "red" . . . the anger and sin that separates us from Holy God . . . and the blood of Christ that provides the way to have forgiveness and fellowship with God once more.

    1. I meant to add a quick get-well-soon, and hope you're able to get some rest on the couch in the meantime. :)

  2. You did poetic justice for red today! I enjoyed your writing on this prompt - it's never easy to put pen to paper so to speak and just come out with victory, well done! Do visit

  3. Sorry to hear you're under the weather today, Jen! I hope the fever passes and you feel better soon. Sometimes it is nice to have an "excuse" to just chill. I love how colors can conjure up so many emotions. My favorite: "A fiery burn that can fuel the soul, move it relentlessly toward what God has created us to do…"

  4. Hi Jen! LOVE that comment about a canary up your nose. Made me smile! (Sorry, but I think you were attempting to inject some humor?)
Red is also the color of a fever, so this subject was chosen with you in mind today. I hope you feel better soon :)

  5. Hahaha- I love the mental image I get when I think of someone with a canary up their nose. :-) I hope you have a very quick recovery and feel better soon!

  6. Hope you feel better soon! I love that you admit you are looking forward to spending time on the couch watching movies ;) way to go!

  7. You and I have much in common this week. :) Love the poetry of this FMF!

  8. it's perfect as is and hope you feel better quickly!

  9. Sacrifice and forgiveness evidence of God's true and abiding love for us. Red the first ray of the Rainbow exemplifies God's great love for us--"This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." I John 4:10. What a beautiful color that can express so much emotion! Especially the Love of the Father and His Son for their wayward children.
    Hope you are filling better

Don't go yet! Leave me a note with your thoughts.
